There's something deeply frustrating about downloading a PDF form, finding your PDF reader doesn't support interactive fields, and then printing it out to fill by hand. I've done this more times than I'd like to admit — tax forms, insurance documents, permit applications. The form was created with fillable fields specifically so you wouldn't have to print it, and yet here we are.

This tool reads your PDF's actual AcroForm fields using pdf-lib — the same library used in most professional PDF workflows. It detects every text field, checkbox, radio button group, and dropdown, then presents them in a clean list so you can fill them in without having to click around the document itself. All four types are detected and rendered as native HTML inputs — text inputs for text fields, real checkboxes for PDF checkboxes, radio button groups for PDF radio groups, and HTML select elements for PDF dropdown/list fields. The field names shown are the actual names embedded in the PDF by whoever created it, which can be technical or abbreviated — that's normal.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

The tool says "No form fields found" — what does that mean? +
Your PDF doesn't have interactive AcroForm fields. This happens with two types of PDFs: flat PDFs (the form was exported as a static document, not an interactive one) and scanned PDFs (the form was photographed or printed and scanned, so it's just an image of a form). Neither can be filled with a form filler — you'd need to either add text overlay using our Add Header/Footer tool, or use the original editable version of the form.
Is my form data private? Sensitive information goes into these forms. +
Yes, completely private. pdf-lib runs entirely in your browser — it's a JavaScript library, not a server-side service. Your PDF never leaves your device and your form data (names, addresses, ID numbers, whatever you type) is never transmitted anywhere. There's no server receiving anything. You can even use this offline if you load the page first.
Will the filled PDF look different from what I see in Adobe Acrobat? +
The text values, checkbox states, and dropdown selections written by pdf-lib are stored in the PDF's AcroForm data — the same format Adobe Acrobat uses. When you open the filled PDF in any compliant PDF reader (Acrobat, Preview, Chrome, Edge, Foxit), it should show your filled values correctly. The visual appearance of the fields depends on the PDF's own field styling, not this tool.
Can I fill password-protected or encrypted PDF forms? +
If the PDF requires a password just to open, you'd need to enter that password in your browser's PDF viewer before downloading and uploading it here. If the PDF is encrypted to prevent editing or filling, the tool will attempt to process it with `ignoreEncryption: true` — which works for many cases. Truly locked forms with owner-level restrictions that block filling may not work.
The field names look like "Text1" or "Checkbox_3a" — is that normal? +
Yes, completely normal. PDF form field names are set by whoever created the form — often a developer, designer, or an automated tool. They frequently use generic names like "Text1", "Field_12", or abbreviated codes. The tool shows the actual field names from the PDF because that's all it has to go on. Context clues from the field's position on the page usually make it clear what each field is for.
Can I save my progress and come back to finish later? +
Not automatically — the tool doesn't save state between sessions. But you can partially fill the form, download the PDF, and then re-upload it here to continue. pdf-lib preserves the values already written in the PDF, so they'll show up as pre-filled when you open the downloaded file again.
