🏭Country of Origin Labels for Amazon FBA — What the Rules Actually Say

I got my first Amazon country of origin complaint about two years into selling private label. A customer flagged that one of my products — sourced from a factory in Guangdong — had no country of origin marking on either the product or the packaging. I hadn't even thought about it. I'd been so focused on FNSKU labels and poly-bagging that I missed something that turns out to be a US Customs and Border Protection requirement, not just an Amazon policy.

US CBP regulations under 19 U.S.C. § 1304 require that all imported articles bear a legible, permanent English-language country of origin marking in a conspicuous place. "Made in China" printed somewhere hidden inside the packaging doesn't count. "PRC" doesn't count either — it has to be the full English country name. The marking must be on the product itself, or on its container if the container goes directly to the consumer. For most Amazon FBA products, that means a label on the packaging visible to the customer when they receive it.

This generator creates exactly the kind of clean, legible country of origin labels that you print on standard label paper and apply before sending inventory to Amazon. Six styles, five sizes, any country — download a full sheet and you're done in two minutes.

⚖️Country of Origin Labeling Rules — What FBA Sellers Need to Know

  • "PRC" is not acceptable — use "China": This trips up more sellers than you'd expect. The FTC and CBP both require the full English name of the country. "PRC" (People's Republic of China) is not considered a clear country of origin marking for US consumer goods. Your label must say "China" or "Made in China" explicitly. Same applies to other countries — no abbreviations.
  • The marking must be legible without magnification: Amazon's receiving staff and US Customs inspectors need to read the label clearly. Tiny 6pt text in a light grey on white background doesn't meet the spirit of the requirement even if it technically has the words on it. Use a minimum of 8pt font, high contrast, and a label size that's appropriate for your product.
  • Permanently affixed — not easily removable: CBP regulations require that the country of origin marking be "permanent" in the sense that it can't be easily removed or altered before the product reaches the consumer. A label stuck on the outside of shrink wrap that gets removed at checkout doesn't count. For FBA products, applying the label directly to the product packaging is the safest approach.
  • Textiles have stricter rules: If you're selling clothing, bedding, towels, or any textile product, country of origin rules are significantly stricter. The Textile Fiber Products Identification Act requires a permanent label sewn into the garment, not a stick-on label. Consult the FTC textile labeling guidelines separately if you're in this category.
  • Products substantially transformed in a third country: If your product is made of materials from one country but manufactured or substantially transformed in another, the country of origin is the country of manufacture — not where the raw materials came from. A shirt made from Indian cotton but sewn in Bangladesh is "Made in Bangladesh." This is where many multi-source suppliers can get sellers in trouble with incorrect labeling.
  • Amazon may not catch missing labels before they cause problems: Amazon's check-in process doesn't specifically verify country of origin labels during normal inbound receiving. However, Amazon does respond to customer complaints and brand registry issues that surface after products are listed. A customer complaint about missing origin labels can trigger an ASIN suspension. It's much easier to label correctly before sending than to deal with a listing suspension and inventory recall later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Amazon require a country of origin label on FBA products? +
Yes. US Customs regulations (19 U.S.C. § 1304) and FTC rules require that most imported products sold in the US carry a legible English-language country of origin marking. For Amazon FBA, products must be labeled before shipment to a fulfillment center. Amazon may flag or return shipments where required country of origin markings are missing, particularly in categories like textiles, food, and manufactured goods.
What should a Made In label say? +
A compliant country of origin label reads "Made in [Country]", "Product of [Country]", or "Manufactured in [Country]". The country name must be the full English name — "PRC" instead of "China" is not acceptable under FTC guidelines. The label must be legible, clearly visible, and affixed in a way that it reaches the consumer.
What size should a Made In label be for Amazon FBA? +
Amazon doesn't specify an exact size for country of origin labels, but they must be clearly legible. Most FBA sellers use 1"×1", 1"×2", or 2"×1" labels. Text must be readable without magnification — minimum 8pt font is recommended, with high contrast between text and background. This generator offers five sizes so you can match the label to your product packaging.
Can I put the country of origin label on the packaging instead of the product? +
For products sold in retail-ready packaging through FBA, placing the country of origin label on the outer packaging is generally acceptable — as long as it's clearly visible when the customer receives it. For products without packaging, the label must be on the product itself. Textile products have stricter rules requiring permanent sewn-in labels under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act.
Is this Made In label generator free? +
Yes, completely free. No signup, no subscription, no hidden fees. Choose your country, style, size, and quantity, then download a print-ready label sheet PDF instantly. The tool runs entirely in your browser — no data leaves your device.
What countries can I generate Made In labels for? +
You can generate Made In labels for any country in the world. The tool includes 40+ commonly used countries in the dropdown, plus quick-select chips for the top manufacturing countries, and a custom entry field where you can type any country name not in the list.
