🔄The Sideways Photo Problem — Every Phone User Has Had It

There's a specific frustration that happens when you shoot a photo in landscape on your phone, send it to someone, and it arrives rotated 90 degrees sideways because the receiving device doesn't read the EXIF orientation tag the same way your phone writes it. I had this happen constantly when I was helping a small restaurant update their website. The owner would send me gorgeous photos of dishes, all shot in landscape, but our CMS kept displaying them sideways. Rather than explaining EXIF metadata and asking her to reshoot, I just dropped each image here, clicked 90° CW, and downloaded. Fixed in seconds, no software needed, she never even knew there was a problem.

Sideways and upside-down photos happen more than people expect — phones, scanners, cameras, WhatsApp, email clients, and different operating systems all handle orientation metadata inconsistently. Beyond fixing broken orientations, rotation is also used creatively: rotating product photos to show different angles in a catalogue, rotating diagrams to fit a landscape layout, straightening slightly tilted photos, or flipping images for mirror effects. All of that is here.

📐Every Rotation Option Explained

90° Clockwise

Rotates right. Fix landscape photos shot with phone pointing right.

90° Counter-CW

Rotates left. Fix landscape photos shot with phone pointing left.

180°

Flips upside down. Fix photos shot with phone held upside-down.

↔️

Flip Horizontal

Mirror image left–right. Useful for selfies and symmetry effects.

↕️

Flip Vertical

Mirror image top–bottom. Reflection effects and upside-down flips.

🎚️

Custom Angle

Any angle -180° to +180°. Straighten tilted horizon lines and skewed scans.

📋How to Rotate Images — 3 Steps

1

Upload Images

Drop one or multiple images. Each gets its own thumbnail in the strip. Click a thumbnail to switch the preview to that image.

2

Choose Rotation

Click a quick-rotate button (90°, 180°, flip) or drag the custom angle slider. Each image stores its own rotation — set different angles per image if needed.

3

Download All

Click Download All — each image is rotated and saved as PNG. Individual download buttons are also available per image in the result grid.

💡Tips for Best Results

  • 90°/180°/270° buttons produce perfect-quality rotations: These are lossless pixel-perfect rotations — the canvas is resized to fit the new orientation exactly and every pixel maps precisely. No anti-aliasing, no quality loss.
  • Custom angle needs a background fill: When you rotate by a non-90° angle (like 15° to straighten a slightly tilted scan), the corners of the original image don't reach the corners of the canvas. The fill color covers those exposed corners. White is best for document scans; transparent is best for PNG photos you'll composite later.
  • Flip Horizontal is great for selfies: Phones shoot selfies mirrored — what you see in the preview is the mirror image. Flip H after shooting to get the orientation that matches what others see when they look at you.
  • Each image keeps its own rotation: In batch mode, you can set different rotations per image. Click a thumbnail, set its rotation, click the next thumbnail, set its rotation. All are saved independently and downloaded correctly.
  • Output is always PNG: PNG is lossless — no additional quality loss on top of any existing JPEG compression. For the smallest file size after rotation, use our Compress JPG tool on the output if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rotate multiple images at once with different angles? +
Yes. Upload multiple images — each gets its own thumbnail. Click a thumbnail to select it, set the rotation for that image, then click the next thumbnail and set its rotation. Each image stores its own rotation setting independently. Click Download All when you're done and every image downloads with its correct rotation applied.
Does rotating an image reduce its quality? +
For 90°, 180°, and 270° rotations: no quality loss — these are exact pixel remappings with no interpolation. For custom angles: minimal anti-aliasing may appear on edges due to sub-pixel positioning. Output is always PNG (lossless), so no additional compression artifacts are introduced.
What's the difference between rotate and flip? +
Rotating turns the image around its centre point — 90° CW tilts the top to the right. Flipping mirrors the image — Flip H creates a left-right mirror image (like looking at it in a mirror), Flip V creates a top-bottom mirror image. They're fundamentally different operations. You can combine them: rotate 90° then flip to get an effect rotation alone can't achieve.
Why does my phone photo appear sideways on some devices? +
Phones save photos with an EXIF orientation tag that tells software how to display the image correctly. Many apps, websites, and older systems ignore this tag and display the raw pixel data — which may be in a different orientation than intended. Rotating the image here bakes the correct orientation directly into the pixel data, so it displays correctly everywhere regardless of EXIF support.
Do my images get uploaded to a server? +
No. All rotation is done in your browser using the Canvas API. Your images never leave your device and are never sent to our servers.
