Converting a color image to grayscale sounds simple but the method you use makes a significant difference to the result. A naive approach treats red, green, and blue channels equally. The problem is that human eyes do not treat them equally — we are far more sensitive to green light than red or blue. An image converted with equal channel weights looks flat and loses tonal detail that the luminosity method preserves.
This tool offers three conversion methods so you can choose the result that works best for your image and your use case. The before/after slider on each result lets you compare the original and grayscale versions side by side. Brightness and contrast controls let you fine-tune the tonal range after conversion. Convert one image or batch-convert dozens at once and download them individually or as a ZIP file.
Drop one or multiple images. JPG, PNG, WEBP, BMP and GIF are all supported.
Pick Luminosity (recommended), Average, or Desaturate. Each gives different tonal results.
Use the brightness and contrast sliders to fine-tune the grayscale result in real time.
Drag the before/after slider on each image card to compare original vs grayscale.
Download individual images as PNG or JPEG, or all images at once as a ZIP file.
Weighted formula that matches how human eyes perceive brightness. Greens appear lighter and blues darker, producing natural-looking results.
0.299R + 0.587G + 0.114B
Adds R, G, and B values and divides by 3. Simple equal weighting. Produces slightly different tones, especially for reds and blues.
(R + G + B) / 3
Takes the midpoint between the highest and lowest channel values. Useful for high-contrast images where you want to preserve tonal extremes.
(max(R,G,B) + min(R,G,B)) / 2
Instant black and white conversion. Three methods, brightness and contrast controls, batch support. Free, private, browser-based.
